Matthew H. Schwimmer
Matt Schwimmer is a Memphis native and a graduate of both The University of Memphis (BA 2013) and The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law (JD 2016). While in law school, Matt was a law review member and notes editor. The School’s Mental Health Law & Policy Journal published his note concerning access to mental health treatment in Tennessee’s criminal justice system. He held board positions with the Public Action Law Society, the law school’s public interest organization, all three years of law school. He participated in the Neighborhood Preservation Legal Clinic prosecuting building code violations for the City of Memphis. He continues to practice in the Shelby County Environmental Court, representing a variety of interested parties.
Prior to his time at GCEM, Matt served as a fellow with the Equal Justice Works/AmeriCorps Elder Justice program. He was based out of West Tennessee Legal Services, a legal aid firm in Jackson, TN that provides civil legal services to indigent clients free of charge. His fellowship focused on legal issues facing older adult victims of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. He became an authority on legal strategies concerning decision making, especially Supported Decision-Making. Abusers, exploiters, and scammers often target real estate, which played a major role in many of his cases. These experiences frame his practice at GCEM and make him uniquely qualified to handle real estate issues affecting vulnerable adults.
Matt’s practice includes Real Estate, Business, Contracts, and Code Violation/Neighborhood Preservation Act issues, as well as limited Estate Planning/Probate.
